Marko's Hockey Journey
Early Years and Draft Pick
Marko Daňo started playing hockey at a young age. In 2007, he played in the famous Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a youth team from Bratislava. This tournament is a big event for young hockey players from all over the world.
As he got older, Marko became a top prospect for the NHL. The NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked him as one of the best international skaters for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He was picked 27th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets. After being drafted, Marko went back to play for HC Slovan Bratislava in the KHL for the 2013–14 season. On March 14, 2014, the Blue Jackets signed him to his first NHL contract.
Making it to the NHL
Marko made his NHL debut on October 9, 2014, playing against the Buffalo Sabres. Just two days later, on October 11, in his second NHL game, he scored his first goal and earned his first assist against the New York Rangers.
He played eight games with Columbus at the start of the 2014–15 season. Then, he was sent to the Springfield Falcons, which was the Blue Jackets' team in the American Hockey League (AHL). The AHL is a league where players often develop their skills before playing full-time in the NHL. In February 2015, Marko was called back up to Columbus and played for the rest of that NHL season. He finished the NHL season with 8 goals and 13 assists in 35 games.
Moving Between Teams
On June 30, 2015, Marko was part of a big trade. He, along with some other players, was traded from the Blue Jackets to the Chicago Blackhawks. In return, the Blue Jackets received Brandon Saad and other players. Even though he was a key part of this trade, Marko started the 2015–16 season with the Blackhawks' AHL team, the Rockford IceHogs, to continue developing his skills.
He was called up to the Blackhawks on November 2, 2015, and played his first game for Chicago that night. He played in 13 games for the Blackhawks, scoring one goal and one assist, before returning to the IceHogs.
On February 25, 2016, Marko was traded again, this time to the Winnipeg Jets. He played 21 games for the Jets, scoring 4 goals and getting 4 assists. In the next season (2016–17), he had 11 points in 38 games for the Jets. He also played a few games for their AHL team, the Manitoba Moose. The Jets re-signed Marko for one-year contracts in both 2017 and 2018.
Returning to Europe
At the start of the 2018–19 season, Marko was not playing regularly for the Jets. On October 14, 2018, he was placed on waivers, which means other teams could claim him. The Colorado Avalanche claimed him the next day. He played 8 games for the Avalanche without scoring any points. On November 22, he was placed on waivers again, and the Jets claimed him back the next day. He was then sent to play for the Manitoba Moose in the AHL for the rest of that season, where he scored 12 goals and had 30 points in 51 games.
In June 2019, Marko became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team. On August 8, he signed a one-year contract to return to the Columbus Blue Jackets. During the 2019–20 season, he mostly played for the Blue Jackets' AHL team, the Cleveland Monsters. He played 3 games for the Blue Jackets, which was his first time back with them since 2015.
After that, Marko decided to return to Europe. On October 4, 2020, he signed with his hometown club, HK Dukla Trenčín, in Slovakia. However, he later signed another one-year contract to return to the Winnipeg Jets organization in November 2020. He played 13 games for the Manitoba Moose in the AHL during the 2020–21 season.
As a free agent in 2021, Marko returned to Europe permanently. On September 6, 2021, he signed with HC Oceláři Třinec in the Czech Extraliga, where he still plays today.
