Marktbreit's Past: A Glimpse into History
Ancient Roman Camp
Near Marktbreit, archaeologists found a huge Roman army camp. This discovery in 1985 was very exciting! No one expected to find such a large Roman base so far into what was then enemy land. The Romans built it during the time of Emperor Augustus. They planned to invade more of Germany from here.
From 1986 to 1992, archaeologists studied the site. They found that the camp's wooden fence, over 2 kilometers long, was finished. Many buildings were also complete. The camp was huge, about 37 hectares. This suggests it could hold two legions or one legion with many extra troops.
However, the camp was never actually used by soldiers. There were no signs of fighting. Important items seemed to have been taken away. This means the Romans left the camp on purpose. A rebellion in another area, Pannonia, delayed their plans. Then, a big defeat in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest stopped all Roman plans east of the Rhine river. So, the Marktbreit camp was prepared but never needed.
Later History of the Town
Gnodstadt was first mentioned in a document in 1124. Marktbreit itself was first written about in 1258. In 1557, King Ferdinand gave Marktbreit the right to hold markets. This is why "Markt" (meaning market) was added to its name.
In the 1600s and 1700s, Marktbreit became an important trading place. It was the shortest way to get from the Main river to the Danube river. The Main river flows into the Rhine river.
In 1806, Marktbreit became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Gnodstadt joined Marktbreit in 1978.
