Ochsenfurt is a town in Germany, located in the district of Würzburg in Bavaria. It sits on the left bank of the Main River. About 11,000 people live in Ochsenfurt. This makes it the biggest town in the Würzburg district.

What's in a Name?
The name "Ochsenfurt" is quite interesting! It's similar to the English city Oxford. Both names come from a "ford," which is a shallow place in a river where you can cross. In Ochsenfurt's case, it was a place where oxen used to cross the river.

Town's Location
The town is on the left side of the Main River. It is about 13 miles (21 km) south of Würzburg.

Ochsenfurt is made up of several smaller areas called Stadtteile. These include Darstadt, Erlach, Goßmannsdorf, Hohestadt, Hopferstadt, Kleinochsenfurt, Tückelhausen, and Zeubelried.
A Look Back in Time
Ochsenfurt has a long history. In 1193, a famous king, Richard I of England, was held here. He was on his way back to England after fighting in the Third Crusade.
A special religious building, Tückelhausen Charterhouse, was started in 1138. It was first a monastery for a group called the Premonstratensians. Later, in 1351, it became home to the Carthusians. In 1803, the monastery was closed down by the government.
Fun Places to Visit
The old charterhouse building has been changed into homes. Since 1991, part of it has been a museum. Here, you can learn about the lives of the Carthusian monks.
Ochsenfurt also has several churches. One important church is St Michael's (Michaelskapelle). It is a beautiful building built in the Gothic style.
How Ochsenfurt Makes Money
In the past, around 1911, Ochsenfurt was known for its trade in wine and farm products. Other businesses included making beer and malt. Today, Ochsenfurt is also home to one of the biggest sugar factories in Germany.
