Marmaduke is a city located in Greene County, Arkansas, United States. In 2020, the city had a population of 1,212 people. It is a small community with an interesting history.

History of Marmaduke
The town of Marmaduke was named after John Sappington Marmaduke. He was a Confederate Major General during the American Civil War. Later, he became the governor of Missouri. People say that Marmaduke set up a camp for his soldiers near where the town is today. A railroad, the Texas and St. Louis Railroad, was built through this area in 1882.
Marmaduke officially became a town on August 2, 1909. By 1914, it had grown quite a bit. The town had many businesses, including drugstores, banks, and restaurants. There were also churches, barber shops, a hotel, and boarding houses. The main jobs at that time were in sawmills, lumber mills, and timber distribution.
Today, some of the main businesses in Marmaduke include the Anchor plastics company and the American Railcar Company.
Recovering from Natural Disasters
Marmaduke has faced some tough times. On April 2, 2006, a strong tornado hit the community. About half of the town was badly damaged or destroyed. Almost every building had some damage. Luckily, no one was killed in Marmaduke, but around 50 people were hurt.
In 2009, a major ice storm affected northern Arkansas. Marmaduke and other areas lost electricity for several weeks. Despite these challenges, the town has worked hard to recover. Most of the damage has been fixed, and the community has rebuilt.
Geography and Location
Marmaduke is found in the northeastern part of Greene County, Arkansas. U.S. Route 49 goes right through the middle of the city. This road leads northeast about 16 miles to Piggott. It also goes southwest about 10 miles to Paragould, which is the county seat of Greene County.
Arkansas Highway 34 also crosses US 49 in the center of town. This highway goes east about 5 miles to Arkansas Highway 139 at Fritz. It goes west about 7 miles to Lafe.
The city covers a total area of about 1.4 square miles (3.4 square kilometers). All of this area is land. Marmaduke is located in the northern part of a physical region called the Arkansas Delta. It sits just east of Crowley's Ridge. The border with the state of Missouri is about 9 miles to the east, following the St. Francis River.

In the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,111 people living in the city. Most of the people were White (96.5%). A small number were Native American (0.1%), Asian (0.1%), or from two or more races (1.6%). About 1.7% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
Education in Marmaduke
Students in Marmaduke attend public schools provided by the Marmaduke School District. Young people go through elementary and secondary school here. They can graduate from Marmaduke High School.
