School History and Changes

Marple Hall School has an interesting history. It started as a different type of school and changed over time.

From Grammar School to Comprehensive

The school was originally called Marple Hall County Grammar School. It was built in 1960. A grammar school is a type of school where students usually have to pass an exam to get in. The school was built next to the old Marple Hall, which was a very old manor house. Parts of the old house can still be seen near the school grounds.

The old manor house was once owned by famous people like John Bradshaw. He was a judge who signed a very important document in English history. Another family, the Isherwoods, also owned the house. Today, two main buildings at the school are named after these historical figures.

At first, Marple Hall Grammar School taught both boys and girls together. Later, it split into two separate schools:

  • Marple Hall County Grammar School for Girls opened in 1965. By 1971, it had about 1,000 girls.
  • Marple Hall Grammar School for Boys had about 1,000 boys by 1972.

Becoming a Mixed School

In September 1974, the two separate grammar schools joined together again. They became one big school called Marple Hall County High School. This new school was a "comprehensive" school, which means it welcomed all students, not just those who passed an entrance exam.

For a few years, from 1974 to 1980, the school had both students who had passed the grammar school exam and those who came from the new comprehensive system. The last group of grammar school students finished in 1980.

Leadership and School Life

Over the years, Marple Hall School has had several headteachers.

  • Derek J Saville became the joint headmaster in 1973.
  • Margaret Cuckson took over in 1990. During her time, the school's sixth form (for older students, usually 16-18) was closed in 1990.
  • Mrs Lesley Calderbank became headteacher in 2004.
  • Dr Rose Hegan took over in September 2010.
  • Mr Joseph Barker, who used to be a history teacher and deputy head at the school, became the headteacher in 2013.

In September 2015, the school was in the news for a time when some students were sent home due to uniform rules.
