History of Martín González
This section explores the past of Martín González. It covers how the area became part of the United States and how its population has grown over time.
Becoming Part of the United States
Long ago, Puerto Rico was controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a place that belongs to the U.S. but isn't a state.
Population Growth Over Time
After Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory, the government started counting how many people lived there. This count is called a census. In 1899, the first census showed that 708 people lived in the Martín González barrio.
Over the years, the number of people living in Martín González grew a lot. You can see how the population changed in the table below. This shows how the community has developed and expanded through the decades.
