Early Life and Education
Martín Lousteau was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He went to Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires for high school. He then studied economics at the Universidad de San Andrés, where he graduated with top honors. He also earned a master's degree in economics from the London School of Economics.
After his studies, he taught economics at universities like Universidad Torcuato Di Tella and Universidad de San Andrés. He also wrote books about Argentina's economic history. One of his books is called Sin Atajos (No Shortcuts).
Before his political career, Lousteau had interesting jobs. He was a tennis instructor for a while. He even worked as a war correspondent in Afghanistan for magazines before the September 11 attacks.
Starting in Public Service
Lousteau began his career in public service in 2003. He worked as an advisor at the Central Bank of Argentina. In 2005, he became the Minister of Production for Buenos Aires Province. Later that year, he was named the Chairman of the Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires. He held this position until he became the Minister of Economy in 2007.
Minister of Economy Role
Martín Lousteau was the first Minister of Economy under President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. During his time, he suggested some changes to the economy. He wanted to slowly reduce government help for energy costs. He also wrote a report about Argentina's economy, pointing out some good things but also warning about rising prices.
A big challenge during his time was a disagreement over taxes on soybean exports. He decided to change these taxes so they would go up or down with global prices. This led to large protests from farmers in early 2008. Lousteau tried to talk with the farmers' leaders, but the situation was very difficult.
Lousteau resigned from his position on April 24, 2008. Carlos Rafael Fernández, who was the head of the tax agency, took his place.
Later Political Career
After leaving his role as Economy Minister, Lousteau continued to write. He published more best-selling books about economics. In 2012, he received a special fellowship from Yale University.
Running for Office
In 2013, Lousteau joined a political group called UNEN. He was elected as a National Deputy for the City of Buenos Aires. Deputies are like representatives in the country's parliament.
In 2015, he ran for mayor of Buenos Aires. He was part of a group called ECO. He almost won the election but was narrowly defeated.
Ambassador and Senator
In 2016, President Mauricio Macri appointed Lousteau as Argentina's Ambassador to the United States. He served in this important role until 2017.

In 2017, he ran for National Deputy again as part of a group called Evolución. He won a seat and continued to serve in Congress. On December 10, 2019, he became a National Senator for Buenos Aires. Senators represent their provinces or cities in the national government.
