Her Family and Early Life

Marta Kostyuk's parents are Oleh Kostyuk and Talina Beiko. Her dad was involved with a junior tennis tournament in Kyiv. Her mom was also a professional tennis player. She even won a tournament in Kyiv in 1994. Marta has an older sister, Mariya. Mariya played tennis for universities in the United States. Marta also has cousins who are professional athletes.

Marta started playing tennis very young. She trained at the Antey Tennis Club in Kyiv. Her mom was her first coach. Marta said she started playing to spend more time with her mom. Her uncle, Taras Beiko, also coached her. He played tennis for Ukraine.

In 2023, Marta got married to Hryhoriy.

Marta's Tennis Journey

Starting Out: 2015–2017

Marta showed great promise early on. In 2015, she won a big junior tournament. It was called the Junior Orange Bowl. The next year, she won the Petits As tournament in France. She won both singles and doubles there.

In 2017, Marta won the girls' singles title. This was at the 2017 Australian Open. She won another professional tournament in Hungary that year. She became the youngest Ukrainian to win a pro singles title. Later in 2017, she won the girls' doubles title at the 2017 US Open. She also won the ITF Junior Masters. This is a special tournament for top junior players. By October 2017, Marta was ranked world No. 2 in junior tennis.

First Major Tournaments: 2018–2019

Marta played in her first major tournament in 2018. This was the 2018 Australian Open. She was the first player born in 2002 to play in a Grand Slam main draw. She won her first two matches. This made her the youngest player to reach the third round of a major since 1997. She then lost to a top Ukrainian player, Elina Svitolina.

In 2018, Marta also won a $60k tournament in Australia. In 2019, she won two more smaller tournaments. She also reached the quarterfinals of a WTA Tour event in Strasbourg, France. She finished 2019 ranked No. 155 in the world.

Big Steps Forward: 2020

In 2020, Marta won a $60k tournament in Cairo. She also won the doubles title there. After a break in the season, she played in the 2020 US Open. She beat two strong players in the first two rounds. In the third round, she played against Naomi Osaka. Naomi Osaka was a former champion. Marta won the second set but lost the match.

Reaching New Heights: 2021

Marta started 2021 strong. She reached the semifinals of the Abu Dhabi Open. At the 2021 French Open, she beat a former champion, Garbiñe Muguruza. She reached the fourth round, which was her best major result at that time. She lost to the defending champion, Iga Świątek. By November 2021, Marta reached the top 50 in the world rankings.

More Success: 2022

At the 2022 Australian Open, Marta reached the third round. She won a doubles title in Slovenia with her partner, Tereza Martincová.

First WTA Title: 2023

Marta had a great start to 2023. At the 2023 Australian Open, she reached the quarterfinals in singles. In doubles, she made it to the semifinals. She beat Elena Rybakina, who was the Wimbledon champion.

Marta reached her first WTA Tour final in Austin, Texas. She won her first singles title there. She beat Varvara Gracheva in the final. Marta dedicated her win to Ukraine. This victory helped her enter the top 40 in singles rankings.

At Wimbledon, she reached the third round. She beat Maria Sakkari, who was ranked in the top 10. After Wimbledon, she started working with a new coach, Sandra Zaniewska. Marta also won a doubles title in Birmingham with Barbora Krejčíková.

Major Quarterfinal and Top Wins: 2024

At the 2024 Australian Open, Marta reached the quarterfinals. This was her best singles result at a major tournament. She beat several strong players. This achievement helped her reach the top 30 in the world.

In February 2025, Marta reached the quarterfinals at the Qatar Open. She beat world No. 3 Coco Gauff again. She also made it to the quarterfinals at the Madrid Open. She lost to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka there.
