Martha Érika Alonso Hidalgo (born December 17, 1973 – died December 24, 2018) was a Mexican politician. She belonged to the National Action Party (PAN). She became the first woman to serve as governor of Puebla, a state in Mexico. She was governor for only ten days in December 2018. Sadly, she died in a helicopter crash. Her husband, Rafael Moreno Valle Rosas, who was governor of Puebla from 2011 to 2017, also died in the same accident.
Early Life and Career
Martha Érika Alonso Hidalgo was born on December 17, 1973. She studied graphic design at the Universidad Iberoamericana Puebla. Later, she earned a master's degree in public communication from the Universidad de las Américas Puebla. She married Rafael Moreno Valle in 2004.
In 2009, she became an active member of the PAN political party. From 2011 to 2016, she led the foundation for the Puebla State DIF System. The DIF is a government agency that helps families and children. During her time, the DIF received more money than it had in the two previous state governments. In 2015, she became the state party's secretary general, which was the second-highest position. Her education and work experience made her one of the most respected first ladies in Puebla's history.
Running for Governor
In 2018, Martha Érika Alonso decided to run for Governor of Puebla. This was her first time running for an elected public office. She was supported by a group of parties called the "Por Puebla al Frente" coalition. This group included her party, the PAN, along with the Party of the Democratic Revolution, Movimiento Ciudadano, and two local parties. These parties had also supported her husband's campaign for governor in 2011.
It was believed that she was chosen as the candidate because surveys showed she was more popular than the mayor of Puebla. During her campaign, she tried to show that she was independent from her husband. She did not use his last name, "de Moreno Valle," which she had used when she led the DIF. However, many people who worked for her husband's campaign and government joined her team. Political experts noted that she used similar campaign strategies to her husband.
On July 1, 2018, Alonso won the election. She defeated Miguel Barbosa Huerta and two other candidates. She became the first female governor of Puebla and the seventh woman governor in Mexico's history.
Tragic Death
On December 24, 2018, just ten days after becoming governor, a helicopter carrying Martha Érika Alonso crashed. Her husband, Rafael Moreno Valle, and other politicians were also on board. The crash happened in a field near Santa María Coronango, close to the city of Puebla. Everyone on the helicopter died. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed the news in a tweet.
A report released on March 27, 2020, by the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) looked into the crash. The report concluded that the helicopter "should not have flown." This was because there was a known problem with its stability system. Both the helicopter operator and the maintenance crew were aware of this issue.
