Joseph Ferdinand Martial Asselin (February 3, 1924 – January 25, 2013) was an important Canadian politician. He served as the 25th Lieutenant Governor of Quebec from 1990 to 1996.

Early Life and Beginnings in Politics
Martial Asselin was born in La Malbaie, Quebec. After studying law, he became a lawyer in 1951. He also served as the mayor of his hometown, La Malbaie, from 1957 to 1963.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In 1958, Martial Asselin was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada. This is where elected representatives from across Canada meet to make laws. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party. He represented the area called Charlevoix.
He lost his seat in the 1962 election. However, he was still appointed as a minister for a short time in 1963. He tried to get re-elected in 1963 but was not successful.
He returned to the House of Commons in 1965 and was re-elected again in 1968.
Joining the Senate
Before the 1972 election, Martial Asselin was appointed to the Senate of Canada. The Senate is another part of Canada's Parliament, where senators review laws. He served as a senator until 1990.
Lieutenant Governor of Quebec
In 1990, Martial Asselin was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. This role represents the King or Queen in the province of Quebec. He held this important position until 1996.
During his time as Lieutenant Governor, a big event happened in Quebec: the 1995 Quebec Referendum. This was a vote where people in Quebec decided if they wanted to become an independent country.
Honours and Later Life
In 1996, Martial Asselin was given a special honour. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. This award recognizes people who have made great contributions to Canada.
In 1992, he was given the special title of "The Right Honourable". This title is given for life to very important Canadians.
Martial Asselin passed away on January 25, 2013, in Quebec City. He was 88 years old.
