About the MDMK Party
How the MDMK Party Started
The MDMK party was founded by Vaiko in 1994. Before this, Vaiko was an active member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. He had been involved in politics since his student days. He was even elected to the Rajya Sabha (a part of India's Parliament) three times. However, in 1994, he left the DMK. He then decided to start his own party, the MDMK, with other leaders.
Supporting Tamils in Sri Lanka
The MDMK party and its leader, Vaiko, have often spoken out in support of the Tamil people. This includes supporting Tamils during the Sri Lankan Civil War. They also supported the idea of Tamils having their own separate area in Sri Lanka.
Standing Up for the Mullaperiyar Dam
The Mullaperiyar Dam is very important for farming in many districts of Tamil Nadu. However, the government of Kerala wanted to remove the dam because of safety worries. Vaiko and the MDMK party led protests to keep the dam. They wanted to make sure that farmers in Tamil Nadu would still have water for their crops.
When the MDMK Party Faced a Split
Sometimes, political parties can have disagreements. In the MDMK, two Members of Parliament (MPs) tried to leave the party. They said they had the support of many party members. However, it was found that their claims were not true. They later joined the DMK party.
Boycotting the 2011 Elections
In 2011, the MDMK decided not to take part in the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. This happened because they could not agree on how many seats they would get in an alliance with another party.
Protesting in Sanchi
In September 2012, the MDMK protested against the visit of the Sri Lankan President to Sanchi. Vaiko and other party members tried to reach Sanchi to protest. However, many of them were stopped by the police before they could get there.
Leaving the NDA Alliance
In December 2014, the MDMK decided to leave the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This alliance was led by the BJP party. The MDMK said that the BJP was not acting in the best interests of the Tamil people.
Party Symbols and Publications
The election symbol for the MDMK party is a top. The top and bottom parts of their flag are red, and the middle part is black. The party also has a weekly newspaper called Sangoli. This newspaper shares news and articles with party members. For the 2024 Parliament Election, the party used the Matchbox with stick symbol in Trichy.
