The Washington Post named him to their High School All-Metro First-team twice. After high school, Austin played in the 2007 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. USA Today named him their National Defensive Player of the Year.
Many top college football programs wanted Austin. He was considered one of the best defensive tackles in the country. In 2007, he decided to play college football at the University of North Carolina.
