Marvin Austin Jr. (born January 1, 1989) is a former American football player. He played as a nose tackle in the National Football League (NFL). Marvin played college football for the North Carolina Tar Heels. The New York Giants chose him in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft. He also played for the Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, and Denver Broncos.

Early Life and High School Football

Marvin Austin grew up in Washington, D.C.. He first went to Coolidge High School. In 2005, he helped his team reach the D.C. championship game.

In 2006, Marvin moved to Ballou High School. He helped Ballou win their first D.C. championship. He made 85 tackles and 17 sacks that year. The Washington Post newspaper named him to their All-Metro First-team twice.

After high school, Marvin played in the 2007 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. USA Today named him to their All-American first-team. They also called him the National Defensive Player of the Year.

Becoming a Top Recruit

Experts like Rivals.com thought Marvin was a top player. They ranked him as the best defensive tackle in his class. Scout.com ranked him third overall in the country. Many big college teams wanted him to play for them. In 2007, Marvin decided to play for the North Carolina Tar Heels.

College Career at North Carolina

As a first-year student at North Carolina, Marvin played in all 12 games. He started in three of them. He finished with 26 tackles and 4.0 sacks.

In 2008, Marvin played in 13 games and started 11. He had 38 tackles and one interception. He even returned the interception for a touchdown. His coaches named him "player of the game" for his performance against Notre Dame.

During his third year, Marvin was chosen for the second-team All-ACC. He had 42 tackles and four sacks that season. He was seen as a potential top pick for the NFL draft.

However, Marvin and some other players faced issues during the 2010 season. They were not allowed to play that year. Even so, North Carolina still had a good season, winning the Music City Bowl.

After College Football

Even though he didn't play in 2010, Marvin still played in the 2011 East-West Shrine Game. He even scored a touchdown in that game.

Later, in 2013, the University of North Carolina sent a letter to Marvin and two other players. This letter meant they could not contact current athletes. They also could not go into the Kenan Football Center or other sports buildings on campus.

Professional Football Career

Marvin Austin was a strong player coming out of college. He showed his skills at the NFL Combine.

New York Giants

The New York Giants picked Marvin in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft. He was the 52nd player chosen overall. His former college teammate, Hakeem Nicks, was already on the Giants.

Unfortunately, Marvin got injured during a preseason game in 2011. He had to miss his entire first season.

In 2012, Marvin played in his first NFL game. This was against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2013, he made a big play in a preseason game against the Jets.

Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins signed Marvin in September 2013. He played for them for a short time. He was released in October of that year.

Dallas Cowboys

In October 2013, the Dallas Cowboys signed Marvin. He played in one game for them. He made one tackle in that game. Due to an injury, he missed the next game and was released in November 2013.

Denver Broncos

Marvin Austin signed with the Denver Broncos in May 2014. He played for the Broncos until 2015.
