Marvin Lawrence Winans (born March 5, 1958) is an American pastor and gospel singer. He is a famous member of the musical Winans family. You might also know him from his role in the TV show Tyler Perry's House of Payne.
Life and career
Early years and family
Marvin Winans was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 5, 1958. He was the fourth of ten children. His parents, Delores and David Glenn Winans Sr., were also musicians. They were known as "Mom and Pop Winans."
Many of Marvin's brothers and sisters also became famous in the music world. This includes his twin brother Carvin, Benjamin (BeBe), and Priscilla (CeCe). They all sing, write songs, and produce music.
Musical journey
In the 1970s, Marvin started singing with his brothers Ronald, Carvin, and Michael. Their first group was called The Testimonial Singers. They even performed at a high school talent show!
In 1975, the group changed its name to The Winans. They became very popular in the 1980s and 1990s. A famous musician named Andrae Crouch discovered them. Their first album as The Winans was released in 1981.
Marvin is a talented organist and pianist. He also writes and produces songs for his family's albums and other gospel artists. In 1985, he won a Grammy award for his singing on the song "Bring Back the Days of Yea and Nay."
The Winans sang their hit song "Tomorrow" at Whitney Houston's funeral. This was a very special and emotional performance.
Marvin also released music with his church choir. In 1992, they released an album called Introducing Perfected Praise. His solo album from 2007, Alone but Not Alone, was nominated for a Grammy award. In 2012, he released Marvin L. Winans presents The Praise + Worship Experience. This album featured other well-known gospel singers.
In 1997, Marvin started the Marvin L. Winans Academy of Performing Arts (WAPA). This school helps young people learn about music and performing.
Serving as a pastor
Marvin Winans founded The Perfecting Church in Detroit, Michigan, in 1989. He is the pastor there.
In 2012, he gave the eulogy (a speech honoring someone who has died) at Whitney Houston's funeral. This was a very important moment, showing his role as a spiritual leader.
Personal life
Marvin Winans was married to gospel singer Viviane "Vickie" Winans for 16 years. They divorced in 1995.
His sons, Marvin Jr. and Josiah Winans, are also involved in music. His stepson, Mario "Skeeter" Winans, is a producer and R&B singer. Marvin Jr. is also a solo artist and a pastor.
Marvin Winans married Dr. Deneen Carter in April 2022.
