Mary Alden (born June 18, 1883 – died July 2, 1946) was an American actress. She acted in both movies and on stage. Mary Alden was one of the first actresses from Broadway to work in Hollywood.

Life and Career

Mary Alden was born in New York City on June 18, 1883. She started her acting career on Broadway. She appeared in plays like Personal in 1907. She also performed in The Rule of Three in 1914.

Early in her career, Mary Alden worked for film companies. These included the Biograph Company and Pathé Exchange. She became very famous for her role in the movie The Birth of a Nation. This film was directed by D. W. Griffith in 1915. In the movie, Alden played a character who was in love with a politician.

The next year, she worked with D.W. Griffith again. She appeared in his film Intolerance in 1916. Other stars in this movie included Mae Marsh and Miriam Cooper. After making Less Than The Dust with Mary Pickford in 1917, she took a break from movies. She went back to acting on stage for a while.

Critics praised Alden's acting in several films. They liked her role as Mrs. Anthon in The Old Nest (1921). They also admired her portrayal of an old lady in The Man With Two Mothers (1922). This movie was produced by Samuel Goldwyn.

Mary Alden was a very busy movie actress. She acted throughout the 1920s and into the early 1930s. Some of her films from this time include The Plastic Age (1925) and The Joy Girl (1927). She also appeared in Ladies of the Mob (1928) and Port of Dreams (1929). Her last movies were Hell's House, Rasputin and the Empress, and Strange Interlude. All of these were released in 1932.

Mary Alden passed away on July 2, 1946, at age 63. She died at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital. This hospital is in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California. She had lived there for the last four years of her life. Mary Alden was buried in Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, California. Her grave is unmarked.
