Mary Shaw (born 1943) is an American software engineer. She is a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. Mary is well-known for her important work in a field called software architecture. This field is all about how computer programs are designed and built.

About Mary Shaw

Her Early Life

Mary M. Shaw was born in Washington D.C. in 1943. Her dad was an engineer and economist. Her mom stayed home to take care of the family.

Mary went to high school in Bethesda, Maryland. This was during the "Sputnik era." At that time, technology was growing very fast.

In high school, Mary joined a special computer program. It was run by a company called International Business Machines (IBM). This program taught students about computers. It was Mary's first time learning about them.

Her Studies and Career

Mary Shaw earned her first degree from Rice University around 1965. Later, she got her PhD in computer science in 1972. She studied at Carnegie Mellon University.

Mary Shaw is seen as a pioneer in computer science. She shares this honor with Marion Créhange. Marion was a French computer scientist.

After college, Mary worked in the computer industry. She was a systems programmer at a company called Research Analysis Corporation. She also kept doing research at Rice University. In 1972, she joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. A faculty member is a professor or teacher.

At Carnegie Mellon, she became a Professor of Computer Science. She also held other important roles. From 1984 to 1987, she was Chief Scientist at the Software Engineering Institute. From 1992 to 1999, she was an Associate Dean.

In 2011, Mary Shaw and David Garlan won a special award. It was for their big contributions to software engineering. They helped develop and promote software architecture.

On October 3, 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama gave Mary Shaw an award. It was the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. She was chosen for this award in 2012.

Mary's Work

Mary Shaw's main research area is software engineering. This includes how software is designed and built. It also covers how to teach about it and its history. Mary wrote very important books and papers. She worked with David Garlan on the topic of software architecture.

Software Architecture, 1996

One of Mary's most famous works is a book. It is called "Software Architecture: Perspectives on an Emerging Discipline." She wrote it with David Garlan. The book looks at how to design software systems. It also explores better ways to build software.

The book aims to connect system design ideas with tools for software developers. It looks at common patterns used to organize systems. It shows how architectural design can affect software design.

In this book, Garlan and Shaw describe software architecture. They say it is a group of computing parts. It also includes how these parts interact. They call these interactions "connectors." A "component" is simply a part that performs a calculation.
