A Glimpse into Marías' Past
How Marías Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a U.S. territory but not a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This type of count is called a census. The census found that 1,062 people lived in the Marías barrio at that time.

Flooding from Río Culebrinas
In May 2019, the Marías barrio experienced heavy flooding. This happened when the Río Culebrinas overflowed its banks. Many areas in different towns were affected. The flooding caused trees to fall and led to landslides. Some highways also had to be closed because of the water.
