Masa is a small community, or barrio, located in the municipality of Gurabo, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,522 people lived there. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a territory of the United States.
A Glimpse into Masa's Past
Puerto Rico used to be a territory of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States government did a census in Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. This first count found that Masa and a nearby community called Jaguar had a combined population of 1,270 people.
