Masashi Oguro (大黒 将志, Ōguro Masashi, born 4 May 1980) is a Japanese former professional footballer. He played as a forward, which means he was a main goal scorer. He also played for the Japan national team from 2005 to 2008. During this time, he played 22 games and scored 5 goals.

Masashi Oguro's Club Career Highlights

Masashi Oguro started his professional football journey in 1999. He joined Gamba Osaka, a team in Japan's top league, the J1 League.

Early Years and Success at Gamba Osaka

In 2001, Oguro was loaned to Consadole Sapporo. After this, he returned to Gamba Osaka and became a very important player. In 2004, he scored the second-highest number of goals in the J1 League. He was also the top Japanese goal scorer that year.

Fans gave him the nickname "Daikokuten." This is because his name in Chinese characters looks similar to the name of a Japanese god. Gamba Osaka even named their official store the Shrine of Daikokuten because of him! In 2005, Oguro helped Gamba Osaka win the J1 League championship. He was the sixth-best scorer in the league that season.

Playing in Europe

In December 2005, Oguro moved to France. He joined a club called Grenoble, which played in the Ligue 2 league. He played in 17 matches for them.

In August 2006, he moved again, this time to Italy. He joined Torino, a well-known Italian club.

Return to Japan and Later Clubs

In June 2008, Oguro came back to Japan. He joined Tokyo Verdy in the J1 League. The team was later moved down to the J2 League. In 2009, he scored 21 goals in the J2 League.

He continued to play for various Japanese clubs. In 2010, he played for Yokohama FC and then FC Tokyo. In 2011, he moved to Yokohama F. Marinos and scored ten goals in his first season there.

Playing in China and Final Years

In 2013, Oguro went to China to play for Hangzhou Greentown. There, he played under manager Takeshi Okada, who he knew from his time at Consadole Sapporo and the Japan national team.

In January 2014, he returned to Japan once more. He signed with Kyoto Sanga FC in the J2 League. He scored many goals for them, with 42 goals in two seasons. He also played on loan for Montedio Yamagata in 2016. Later, he joined Tochigi SC in 2018.

Masashi Oguro's International Career

Masashi Oguro was chosen to play for the Japan national team in 2005. This was for the 2006 World Cup qualifying games.

World Cup Qualification and Appearances

In his second game for the national team, on February 9, 2005, Oguro scored a goal in the final moments of the game. This helped Japan win 2–0 against North Korea in a World Cup qualifying match.

In 2005, he was one of the top five goal scorers for the Japan national team. In May 2006, he was selected to play for Japan in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. He played a total of 22 games and scored 5 goals for Japan until 2008.
