Micah Davis (born June 8, 1993), known by his stage name Masego (/məˈsɡ/ mə-SAY-goh), is a talented musician and singer. He has roots in Jamaica, America, and India. Masego is especially known for playing the saxophone in his music.

In 2016, Masego released two EPs (Extended Plays): The Pink Polo EP with Medasin, and Loose Thoughts. He became widely known in 2017 after releasing "Tadow" with French artist FKJ. His first full album, Lady Lady, came out in 2018. Masego's album Studying Abroad: Extended Stay was even nominated for a Grammy Award in 2022!

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Micah Davis was born on June 8, 1993. His father was from Jamaica and served in the U.S. Air Force. His mother was an African-American businesswoman. He was raised with his two sisters. One sister is also a musician, and the other works in voice acting.

Both of Masego's parents were pastors, and he grew up in a Christian home. Because his father was in the military, his family moved often. They lived in Virginia and also spent a few years in Sumter, South Carolina.

Masego started learning music at a young age. He taught himself to play the drums without formal lessons. He also learned to play the piano, saxophone, and various drum machines. In high school, Micah chose the name Masego. This name means "blessing" in the Tswana language. It was inspired by his church name. He attended Woodside High School and Old Dominion University in Virginia before leaving to focus completely on his music career.

In 2015, Masego released his first EP, The Pink Polo EP, with Medasin. This EP included the popular song "Girls That Dance." The next year, he released another EP called Loose Thoughts.

A big moment in his career came in 2017 when he met French artist FKJ. They created the song "Tadow" together. FKJ shared that they made the song by improvising, or making it up on the spot, soon after they met!

On September 7, 2018, Masego released his first full-length album, Lady Lady. This album featured other artists like FKJ, SiR, and Tiffany Gouché. "Tadow" was the main song from this album.

His EP, Studying Abroad, was released on November 13, 2020. Masego then released his self-titled album, Masego, on March 3, 2023.

Musical Style and Influences

Masego's parents being pastors greatly influenced his music. He shared that church was a place where he could learn music from many talented musicians. He also looks up to artists like Lukky (DJ PLM), John P. Kee, Andre 3000, and Cab Calloway.

Growing up, Masego's room had over 200 vinyl records on the walls. At the same time, his friends introduced him to strong drum beats and trap music. He calls his unique musical style "TrapHouse Jazz." This name combines elements of trap music, house music, and jazz.
