Mashonda Karima Dean (born January 9, 1978) is an American R&B singer. She is from Boston, Massachusetts. In 2004, she married music producer Swizz Beatz. She released her first album, January Joy, in 2005. Later, in 2011, she appeared on the TV show Love & Hip Hop: New York.
Mashonda's Music Journey
Mashonda started her music career in 1998. She signed a deal with Warner Chapel Music. She wrote songs for other artists, like Monifah. In 1999, she signed a record deal with Columbia Records.
Early Songs and Collaborations
In 1999, Mashonda sang on Jay-Z's song "Girl's Best Friend". This song was for the movie Blue Streak. It was also on Jay-Z's album Vol. 3... Life and Times of S. Carter. She also sang on Eve's song "Gotta Man". Mashonda appeared on songs by other artists too. These included Cassidy's "Get No Better" and Fat Joe's "Listen Baby".
First Album and Mixtapes
Mashonda's first album was called January Joy. It came out in November 2005 in Japan. Famous producers like Swizz Beatz and Kanye West worked on it. The album had two main songs: "Back of da Club" and "Blackout". "Blackout" featured Snoop Dogg. In 2009, she released a mixtape called The Renovation Series. Mashonda later took a break from music to raise her son.
Other Projects
Mashonda has also worked as a writer. She wrote a column called "Pandora's Box" for Vibe Vixen magazine.
She wrote a book about co-parenting in 2018. It is called Blend: The Secret to Co-Parenting and Creating a Balanced Family. Her co-parents, Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, also helped with the book.
Mashonda's Personal Life
Mashonda started dating music producer Kasseem Dean, known as Swizz Beatz, in 1998. They got married in 2004. Their son, Kasseem Dean, Jr., was born in 2006. The couple announced they were separating in 2008. Their divorce was completed in 2010.
