The Matabitchuan River is a river located in Ontario, Canada. It flows through two areas called Nipissing and Timiskaming.

Where the River Flows

The Matabitchuan River starts its journey at Rabbit Lake. This lake is in the Nipissing District and sits about 288 meters (945 feet) above sea level.

From Rabbit Lake, the river flows towards the northeast. It passes over the Rabbit Lake Dam and through a spot called Rabbit Chute. Along the way, another smaller stream, Lorrain Creek, joins the Matabitchuan River.

Journey to Lake Timiskaming

The river continues its northeast path and enters the Timiskaming District. It then reaches Fourbass Lake, which is about 274 meters (899 feet) above sea level.

Finally, the Matabitchuan River empties into the western side of Lake Timiskaming. This happens about 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) south of where the Montreal River also flows into the lake.

Making Electricity

There is a dam at Fourbass Lake that helps control how much water flows out of it. Some of the water from the lake is sent through a special large pipe called a penstock.

This penstock carries water to the Matabitchuan Generating Station. This station is a power plant run by Ontario Power Generation. It uses the force of the flowing water to create electricity.

Getting There

If you wanted to visit the area, Highway 567 can take you there. This highway starts from the community of North Cobalt, which is part of Temiskaming Shores. It leads towards the Lower Notch generating station, which is also nearby.
