The Alabama milkvine (scientific name: Matelea alabamensis) is a special flowering plant. It belongs to the dogbane family. People also call it the Alabama anglepod or Alabama spiny-pod. This plant grows naturally in the southeastern United States. You can find it in states like Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

About the Alabama Milkvine

The Alabama milkvine is a plant that lives for many years. It grows from underground stems called rhizomes. These rhizomes help the plant spread. It usually has one to three stems. These stems can creep along the ground. They can also twine, or wrap, around other plants nearby. The stems can grow several meters long.

What Does It Look Like?

The stems of the Alabama milkvine are green. Sometimes, they have a maroon tint. They are filled with a milky sap. Newer parts of the plant have small reddish dots. The leaves grow opposite each other on the stem. They have short stems called petioles. These petioles are covered in scattered hairs. The leaves themselves are yellow-green. They can be up to 10 to 15 centimeters long.

The plant's flowers grow in a cluster called an umbel. Each flower is about 2.5 centimeters wide. They have five yellow-green parts called lobes. These lobes have a green net-like pattern. The Alabama milkvine blooms from March through June. Vines that climb up other plants tend to flower more.

After flowering, the plant produces a fruit. This fruit is a yellow-green, spiky pod. It's called a follicle. The pods can grow up to 10 centimeters long. Inside the pods are seeds. Each seed has a tuft of long, white hairs. These hairs help the seeds fly away on the wind. This helps the plant spread to new places.

Where Does It Grow?

This plant likes to grow in ravines within forests. Ravines are deep, narrow valleys. It usually grows between the dry upper slopes and the moist lower slopes. The Alabama milkvine needs other plants to climb on. It also needs some sunlight. It can handle some shade. However, it grows stronger and produces more fruit in sunnier spots.

The plant needs natural events to keep the forest open. This allows enough sunlight to reach it. Sometimes, storms help by opening up the forest canopy. The forest canopy is the top layer of leaves and branches. Large trees like Magnolia grandiflora (Southern Magnolia) and Fagus grandifolia often make up the canopy. Oaks and hickories can also be found there.

Why Is It Rare?

The Alabama milkvine is considered one of the rarest plants in the southeastern United States. Its biggest problem is the loss of its habitat. Habitat loss means the places where it naturally grows are disappearing. For example, in Florida, some areas have been changed to grow pine trees.

Some logging can help the plant by letting in more light. But heavy logging and clearcutting (removing all trees) are very harmful. These actions can also lead to soil erosion. The plant is also affected by invasive plants. One example is Lonicera japonica (Japanese honeysuckle). These plants can take over the milkvine's space.

Another issue is fire suppression. Natural fires used to help keep the forest open. Now, without these fires, the forest can become too dense. This means less light reaches the milkvine. Less light leads to fewer fruits. Caterpillars and deer might also eat the plant, which can be a problem.

Today, there are only about "a couple dozen" known places where this plant grows. Four of these populations are watched carefully. This happens at the Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve. The Nature Conservancy helps protect these plants.
