Math Rescue is an exciting educational platform game that helps you practice your math skills. It was created in 1992 by Karen Crowther from Redwood Games. The game was published by Apogee Software.
Before it was released, the game was called "Number Rescue." It came out in October 1992 for computers using DOS. Math Rescue uses a similar game engine to an earlier game called Word Rescue. This means they share some of the same basic programming.
At first, a part of Math Rescue was given away for free. This was called "shareware." Later, you could buy the full game. A follow-up game, Math Rescue Plus, was also released. The full version of Math Rescue is still available to buy today. It was even released on Steam in 2015 for Windows and Mac OS computers.

How to Play Math Rescue
Math Rescue is all about solving math problems while you play. As you move through the game, you will see special boxes floating in the air. When your character touches one of these boxes, you are taken inside it. Inside the box, you will find a math problem to solve. If you answer correctly, you earn points!
Game Episodes and Levels
Math Rescue has three different episodes for players to explore. These episodes are:
- Visit Volcanoes and Ice Caves
- Follow the Gruzzles into Space
- See Candy Land
Only the first episode was available for free as shareware. To play the other two episodes, you needed to buy the full game. Each episode has 15 levels for you to complete. The game also has a special "learning mode." This mode lets you always have word problems appear in the game.
Story of Math Rescue
The game's story begins when strange creatures called the Gruzzles steal all the numbers from the world. This causes a lot of problems for everyone! Your character sees a Gruzzle taking numbers from the front of a house.
Suddenly, a friendly butterfly named Benny comes to help you. Together, you start an adventure to stop the Gruzzles. Your goal is to get all the stolen numbers back.
Who Are the Gruzzles?
It turns out that the Gruzzles are pets from an alien race called the Glixerians. These aliens live on a planet called Glixer II. The Glixerians sent their Gruzzle pets to Earth to steal our numbers. They wanted humans to become their new pets!
Benny the Butterfly used to be a Gruzzle himself. He found a safe home on Earth. Benny even recognizes one of the Gruzzles, named Zorja, as his cousin. Benny talks to Zorja and convinces her that the Gruzzles can be free on Earth. They don't have to be pets for the Glixerians anymore.
In the end, the Gruzzles return all the numbers they stole. They even help gardeners by eating slugs! The Glixerians, however, start planning another way to cause trouble for Earth.
