Mathias Grünewald facts for kids

Mathias Grünewald (born between 1475 and 1480 in Würzburg, died on August 31, 1528) was an important German painter and artist. He is known as one of the most significant German artists from the Renaissance period. His real name was Mathias Gothart or Mathias Neidhardt. Sometimes people also called him Mathias of Aschaffenburg.
Today, we only know of ten paintings and 35 drawings that he made. For a long time, many of his artworks were thought to be by Albrecht Dürer. However, Dürer's painting style was very different from Grünewald's. All the artworks by Grünewald that we still have today show religious scenes and stories.
Who Was Mathias Grünewald?
Mathias Grünewald was born in the German city of Würzburg. He lived during a time called the Renaissance. This was a period in Europe when art, science, and learning became very important again. It was a time of great change and new ideas.
Grünewald was a master painter. He created artworks that were full of strong feelings and bright colors. Even though he is very famous now, not much is known about his life. He signed his works with different names, which is why his real name is still debated.

Grünewald's art is special because it shows deep emotions. He often painted scenes from the Bible, like the life of Jesus. His most famous work is the Isenheim Altarpiece. This large painting was made for a hospital. It was meant to bring comfort to sick people.
His paintings are known for their dramatic lighting and detailed figures. He used colors in a unique way to make his scenes feel powerful. Even though only a few of his works survived, they show how talented he was. His drawings are also very detailed and beautiful.
