Early Life and Interests
Matt Fitzpatrick was born in Sheffield, England. He went to Tapton School and finished his A-levels in 2013. Matt is a big fan of soccer and has always supported his local team, Sheffield United.
His younger brother, Alex, also plays golf. Alex played college golf at Wake Forest University in the United States. He also played in the Walker Cup in 2019 and 2021 before becoming a professional golfer in 2022.
Amateur Golf Journey
Matt Fitzpatrick showed his talent early on. In 2012, he won the Boys Amateur Championship. The next year, he played in the 2013 Open Championship and was the best amateur player, earning him The Silver Medal. He and another amateur, Jimmy Mullen, were the only ones to make the cut in that tournament.
Later in 2013, Matt won the U.S. Amateur title. This big win gave him special invitations to play in major tournaments like the 2014 Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, and Open Championship, as long as he stayed an amateur. Winning the U.S. Amateur also made him the top-ranked amateur golfer in the world, and he received the Mark H. McCormack Medal. In September 2013, he also played in the 2013 Walker Cup.
Matt briefly attended Northwestern University to play college golf. However, he left after just one term in January 2014 to focus on his amateur golf career full-time. During his time at Northwestern, he won one tournament and helped his team win two others.
Becoming a Professional Golfer
Matt Fitzpatrick decided to become a professional golfer after the 2014 U.S. Open. This meant he gave up his invitation to the 2014 Open Championship. His first professional tournament was the Irish Open in 2014. He then played in several events on the European Tour and Challenge Tour.
In November 2014, Matt successfully qualified for the 2015 European Tour. He finished 11th in the qualifying school, which earned him a spot on the tour.
First Professional Wins
Matt's first professional win came in October 2015 at the British Masters. He won by two strokes and earned a large prize. This victory helped him enter the top 100 golfers in the world for the first time. He finished his first season on tour with one win and nine top-10 finishes.
In April 2016, Matt played in the 2016 Masters Tournament and finished tied for 7th place. In June of that year, he won the Nordea Masters. These good results helped him get chosen for the 2016 Ryder Cup team. In November 2016, he won the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, which was his third career win.
Matt continued to win on the European Tour. He won the Omega European Masters in Switzerland twice in a row, in 2017 and 2018, both times in a playoff. In December 2020, he won the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai again, which was also his first Rolex Series title.
In September 2021, Matt played for the European team in the 2021 Ryder Cup in Wisconsin. The U.S. team won that year. A few weeks later, Matt won the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.
Major Championship Victory
In June 2022, Matt Fitzpatrick achieved his biggest win yet: his first major championship at the U.S. Open. He won by one shot at The Country Club in Massachusetts. This was the same place where he had won the U.S. Amateur in 2013! He became only the second male golfer, after Jack Nicklaus, to win both the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur at the same golf course.
Recent Successes
In April 2023, Matt won the RBC Heritage tournament. He beat Jordan Spieth in a playoff, winning on the third extra hole with a fantastic shot.
In September 2023, Matt was part of the European team for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy. The European team won the cup that year.
In October 2023, Matt won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He also won the pro-am part of the event with his mother, Susan, as his partner. The tournament was shortened to 54 holes because of bad weather.
