Matthew Helders (born May 7, 1986) is an English musician. He is best known as the drummer and a singer for the rock band Arctic Monkeys. He has also released his own music and worked with other famous artists like Iggy Pop.

Music Career

Matt Helders is a very important part of the Arctic Monkeys. He plays the drums and often sings backing vocals on many of their songs. His voice adds a lot to the band's sound.

Other Music Projects

In 2008, Matt started working on remixes for other bands. He remixed songs for the Hives and Duran Duran. He also worked with the band We Are Scientists and remixed one of their songs.

Matt also helped create a DJ mix CD called Late Night Tales: Matt Helders. This album came out in 2008. It even included a spoken word track written and performed by his bandmate, Alex Turner.

In 2016, Matt played drums on the album Post Pop Depression. This album was created by Iggy Pop and Josh Homme. Matt also went on tour with them to support the album. Later that year, he played drums on a song called "Diamond Heart" for American singer Lady Gaga's album Joanne.

In 2018, Matt helped produce an album for Joe Carnall. Joe Carnall is the singer from the band Milburn. The new project was called Good Cop Bad Cop. Their album came out in 2019.

Clothing Line

In May 2007, Matt Helders launched his own clothing line. It included a jacket, a zip-up hoodie, and three T-shirts. When people bought the clothes, they also got a CD. This CD featured a special remix of an Arctic Monkeys song. A small part of the money from each sale went to a charity called Arthur Rank Hospice.

His Style of Music

Matt Helders has talked about how he started playing drums. He said it was "the only thing left" when the band first formed. None of them played instruments at first. The others got guitars, and he bought a drum kit.

Matt has also shared that rap music influenced the band. He said they were big rap fans in school. He feels it still influences their music, especially his drumming. He likes the "groove element" that rap music has.

Sheffield Roots

The band members, including Matt, often sing in their natural Sheffield accent. Matt explained that it would feel strange to talk in their normal accent between songs, then suddenly sing like they were from California. He thinks it would look a "bit daft."

Matt loves his hometown of Sheffield. He feels that traveling the world makes him appreciate Sheffield even more. He says there are always new things to write about there. He also points out that even though the band is famous, he can still walk around Sheffield without being mobbed. He says it's harder if all the band members go out together. As a nod to his hometown, Matt sometimes has the numbers "0114" on his drum kit. This is the telephone dialing code for Sheffield.

Matt prefers to play drums wearing comfortable 'joggers' instead of jeans. He says this is because of movement and sweat. He doesn't want to sweat in his jeans and wear them again the next day. He calls wearing sweaty jeans "unhygienic."

Personal Life

Matt Helders met model Breana McDow in 2011. They met while filming the music video for the Arctic Monkeys' song Suck It and See. They got engaged in 2013. In October 2015, they had a daughter named Amelia Darling Helders. Matt and Breana got married in Rome on June 11, 2016.

In 2021, Matt started dating American rapper Amanda Blank. They had first met in Brazil back in 2007. Matt and Amanda got married in September 2023. This happened during the Arctic Monkeys' U.S. tour.

Matt Helders lives in Los Angeles. He became interested in photography when he was a child. However, he started taking it more seriously when he began touring with his band. Matt often uses film for his pictures. He likes to use a Leica M6 camera. One of his photos was even used as the artwork for the Arctic Monkeys' album The Car (2022).
