Music Career
Matt Helders is a very important part of Arctic Monkeys' sound. He often sings backup vocals for the band. Sometimes, he sings along with the lead singer, Alex Turner. He has also sung lead or co-lead vocals on songs like "D Is for Dangerous" and "Brick by Brick".
Other Music Projects
Matt has also worked on music outside of Arctic Monkeys. In 2008, he created remixes for other bands. These included "T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S" by the Hives and "Skin Divers" by Duran Duran. He also played drums for We Are Scientists during some TV shows in the UK.
Matt helped create the album Skanky Skanky for Toddla T. He also remixed a song called "Again & Again" for Roots Manuva. In August 2008, Matt put together a special DJ mix CD. It was part of the LateNightTales series and was called Late Night Tales: Matt Helders. This album even included a spoken word track written and performed by his bandmate, Alex Turner.
In 2016, Matt played drums on the album Post Pop Depression. This album was created by Iggy Pop and Josh Homme. Matt also went on tour with them to support the album. Later that year, he played drums on American singer Lady Gaga's album Joanne.
In 2018, Matt worked as a producer for Joe Carnall. Joe is the lead singer of the band Milburn. Their new project was called Good Cop Bad Cop. They released an album with the same name in March 2019.
His Style and Influences
Matt Helders became a drummer because it was the only instrument left. When the band started, none of them played anything. They just decided to form a band. Everyone else got guitars, so Matt bought a drum kit.
Musical Influences
Matt has said that rap music influenced the band, especially his drumming. He mentioned the "groove element" from funk music. Seeing Queens of the Stone Age perform live was a big moment for him. He said it made him want to hit the drums harder.
Sheffield Roots
The band members, including Matt, like to sing in their natural Sheffield accent. Matt explained that it would feel strange to speak in their normal accent between songs, then suddenly sing like they were from California.
Matt loves his hometown of Sheffield. He feels that traveling the world makes him appreciate Sheffield even more. He says there are always new things to write about there. When he comes home, it's easy to go back to his old routines. Matt also mentioned that despite being famous, he can still walk around Sheffield without being recognized too much. To show his pride in Sheffield, Matt sometimes has "0114" on his drum kit. This is the dialing code for Sheffield.
Matt prefers to play drums wearing comfortable 'joggers'. He says this is better than jeans for movement and sweat. He thinks it's unhygienic to sweat in jeans and wear them the next day.
Personal Life
Matt Helders started dating model Breana McDow in 2011. They met while filming a music video for Arctic Monkeys' song Suck It and See. They got engaged in 2013. In October 2015, they had a daughter named Amelia Darling Helders. Matt and Breana got married in Rome on June 11, 2016. They later separated in early 2019.
In 2021, Matt started dating American rapper Amanda Blank. They had first met in Brazil in 2007. Matt and Amanda got married in September 2023. This happened during the Arctic Monkeys' U.S. tour.
Matt Helders lives in Los Angeles. He became interested in photography when he was a child. However, he started taking it seriously when he began touring with the band. Matt mostly uses film cameras. He often uses a Leica M6. He has also used a Contax G2 and Canonet in the past. When he takes digital pictures, he uses a Sony α7. He is inspired by the photographer William Eggleston. One of Matt's pictures was used as the artwork for the Arctic Monkeys' album The Car (2022).
