Rest on the Flight into Egypt by Philipp Otto Runge, 1806
Book Gospel of Matthew
Christian Bible part New Testament

Matthew 2:15 is a verse from the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament of the Bible. This verse talks about Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus traveling to Egypt. They went there to escape from King Herod, who wanted to harm Jesus.

The Flight to Egypt

This verse tells us that Joseph, Mary, and Jesus stayed in Egypt. They remained there until King Herod died. Their journey to Egypt was a way to keep Jesus safe.

Why They Fled to Egypt

Before this verse, an angel warned Joseph in a dream. The angel told him that King Herod was looking for Jesus to kill him. So, Joseph quickly took his family and left for Egypt. This journey is often called the "Flight into Egypt."

The Prophecy Fulfilled

Matthew 2:15 also mentions an old prophecy. A prophecy is a message from God about the future. This specific prophecy was spoken by a prophet long ago. It said, "Out of Egypt I called my son."

This part of the verse means that Jesus's time in Egypt fulfilled this ancient message. It showed that God was guiding their journey. Even though they had to flee, it was part of a bigger plan.
