He made his first top-level appearance in 1988. In his first full year with St. George, he scored 8 goals in 27 games. This helped his team finish second in the league. He became a regular player for St. George before moving on.
Playing for Marconi Stallions
After St. George, Bingley joined the Marconi Stallions. In his first season with Marconi, he played 24 games. His team finished second in the league and then won the championship! They beat West Adelaide 1–0 in the Grand Final. Matthew played 117 league games for Marconi, scoring 19 goals. During his time there, Marconi was a very strong team.
Adventures in Japan
In 1997, Matthew Bingley moved outside Australia to play soccer for the first time. He joined J1 League club Vissel Kobe in Japan. He played 24 games and scored two goals for them. He then moved to another Japanese club, JEF United Ichihara, where he played 11 matches.
Returning to Australia
After his time in Japan, Bingley came back to Australia. He joined a new Sydney NSL club called Northern Spirit FC. He was a key player for the Spirit, playing 60 games over three seasons.
In 2001, he moved to Newcastle United. This was a good move for him, as Newcastle finished second in the league. However, they didn't make it to the Grand Final. He continued with Newcastle for another season before signing with Perth Glory.
Winning the NSL Championship
Matthew Bingley played 26 games for Perth Glory in the 2003–04 season. Perth finished at the top of the league. He played the entire Grand Final match, which Perth won 1–0 in extra time. This victory secured the very last NSL Championship title.

After the NSL ended, Bingley moved to Malaysia to play for Pahang in the new Malaysian Super League. His team won the first championship there.
In 2005, he returned to Australia to join Sydney FC. This team was part of the brand new A-League. Before the A-League even started, Bingley made history for Sydney FC. He scored the first goal in their 2–0 win over AS Magenta. This win meant Sydney FC would play in the FIFA Club World Championship in Japan.
Matthew played 20 games for Sydney FC in the A-League. He also helped them win a match at the Club World Championship, securing fifth place. He played the full match when Sydney FC won the A-League Grand Final 1–0. After this, he left Sydney FC but later returned for a short time to help the team with his experience.
