Early Life and Education

Matthew Wolfenden was born in Norwood Green, West Yorkshire, England. He went to Brighouse High School. Before becoming an actor, Matthew was a talented gymnast. He was even part of the British gymnastics team. However, at age 16, he had an accident during practice. He hurt his back, which meant he could no longer do gymnastics. After this, he decided to try acting.

Family Life

Matthew was married to Charley Webb, who also acts in Emmerdale. They have three sons together. Matthew asked Charley to marry him on Christmas Day in 2009. They got married in February 2018. Their third son was born in July 2019. They separated in September 2023.

Starting in Emmerdale

In 2006, Matthew Wolfenden got the role of David Metcalfe in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale. David is the son of Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell). Matthew's very first acting job was as an extra on Emmerdale. He first tried out for the role of Eli Dingle, but Joseph Gilgun got that part. Later, he was called back and given the role of David Metcalfe.

Other TV Appearances

Matthew has also appeared in Hollyoaks: Let Loose. This show is a spin-off from the popular TV series Hollyoaks. In early 2007, Matthew took part in the second series of Soapstar Superstar. This was a singing competition for actors from soap operas. He finished in ninth place. He sang songs like "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter and "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen.

Dancing on Ice Champion

Matthew Wolfenden was a contestant on the seventh series of Dancing on Ice. He was partnered with Russian ice dancer Nina Ulanova. His background in gymnastics and dance helped him a lot. He made it to the final round of the competition. He competed against Hollyoaks actress Jorgie Porter and The X Factor contestant Chico Slimani. Matthew continued to act in Emmerdale while he was training for Dancing on Ice. He went on to win the series!

Becoming a Screenwriter

In 2022, Matthew Wolfenden and his Emmerdale co-star Roxy Shahidi started working as screenwriters. They wrote an episode for the BBC medical drama Holby City. They also wrote three episodes for the BBC soap opera Doctors.
