History of Matutano
The story of Matutano began in the 1950s. A Spanish businessman named Luis Matutano Jover opened a snack factory in Barcelona. His family had been making potato snacks since 1873.
Early Years and Growth
At first, the factory made a small amount of snacks. In 1965, Luis Matutano Jover teamed up with an American food company called Pet Milk. This partnership created the official Matutano brand. They started with 42 employees and 8 delivery trucks.
In 1969, Matutano bought another company called Rick SA. Rick SA had a factory in Burgos. This helped Matutano start selling its snacks all over Spain.
Joining Frito Lay and New Products
In 1971, a large international company called Frito Lay bought Matutano. Frito Lay is part of PepsiCo. After this, Frito Lay brought many of its popular products to Spain.
Some of these new snacks included:
The Smiling Face Logo
In 1975, Matutano started using its famous logo: a smiling face. This happy logo helped the company become very popular. During the 1970s and 1980s, Matutano became the top seller of potato chips and snacks in Spain. It also began to expand its business into Portugal.
Changes to the Brand Look
In 1997, Lays potato chips arrived in Spain. Matutano then changed the look of all its products. They started using the Frito Lay logo instead of the smiling face. However, this change was not very successful. So, in 2009, PepsiCo decided to bring back the classic smiling face logo for Matutano.
Matutano's company motto is: Y hoy ¿Has sonreído? This means "And today, have you smiled?"
