History of Mauldin
How Mauldin Got Its Name
The first land in what is now Mauldin was given to Benjamin Griffith in 1784. The city got its name in a special way in 1885. It was named after W. L. Mauldin, who was the lieutenant governor of South Carolina. He helped bring the Greenville and Laurens Railroad through the area. Because of his help, the train station was called "Mauldin." Over time, the whole area became known as Mauldin.
Mauldin Through the Years
During the American Civil War, many people from Mauldin left to fight. The community became very small and quiet. It did not fully recover until after World War II. In 1960, Mauldin officially became a town. Later, in 1969, it became a city.

Mauldin is in the southern part of Greenville County. It is located between the city of Greenville to the northwest and Simpsonville to the southeast. The city covers about 12.13 square miles (31.42 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
Major Roads in Mauldin
U.S. Route 276 (Main Street) goes right through the middle of Mauldin. This road can take you about 8 miles northwest to downtown Greenville. It also goes about 5 miles southeast to Simpsonville. Interstate 385 runs along the eastern side of Mauldin. This highway connects to Interstate 85 near Greenville. I-385 also connects with Interstate 185 on the southern edge of Mauldin.
