Mauren (pronounced MAO-ren) is a small town in Liechtenstein. It is located in the northern part of this country. About 4,400 people live there.
Mauren is known for being the place where the Curta mechanical calculator was made. This special calculator was produced by a company called Contina AG, right in Mauren.
History of Mauren
Mauren has a long and interesting history. Long ago, during ancient times, a Roman road passed through the area where Mauren is today.
The town was first mentioned in old papers in the year 1178. Back then, it was called "Muron." There is a special monument in Mauren. It honors Peter Kaiser, who was a famous teacher and historian from Liechtenstein. He lived from 1793 to 1864.
Since 1905, Mauren has also been its own church community.
How Mauren is Governed
Mauren is managed by a mayor and a group of 10 people. This group is called the municipal council. They are chosen in elections every four years. This system has been in place since 1975.
The current mayor of Mauren is Peter Frick. He became mayor in 2023.
Famous People from Mauren
Many interesting people have come from Mauren. Here are a few of them:
- Gebhard Schädler (1776–1842) was a surgeon. He practiced medicine in Liechtenstein.
- Peter Kaiser (1793–1864) was a historian and a statesman. He was very important during the 1848 revolution in Liechtenstein.
- Peter Büchel (1872–1958) worked for the government. He was also a member of the Landtag of Liechtenstein, which is like the country's parliament.
- Fritz Kaiser (born 1955) is a successful businessman. He works with money and also helps others through charity.
- Dominique Hasler (born 1978) is a politician from Liechtenstein. She grew up in Mauren. Since 2017, she has been a minister in the government. She is in charge of things like home affairs, education, and the environment.
- Jürgen Berginz (born 1989) is a bobsledder. He competed for Liechtenstein in the 2010 Winter Olympics.
