Schaanwald is a small village in the country of Liechtenstein. It is part of the Mauren municipality. About 1,000 people live in Schaanwald.

Village History

Before Schaanwald became a village, the ancient Roman Empire was here. Archaeologists have found old Roman villas (large houses) in Schaanwald. These findings show that people lived here a very long time ago!

Where is Schaanwald?

Schaanwald is in the middle of northern Liechtenstein. It is very close to the border with Austria, near a town called Feldkirch.

The village is on an important road. This road connects Liechtenstein to Buchs in Switzerland and Feldkirch in Austria. The closest towns to Schaanwald are Mauren and Nendeln.

Getting Around Schaanwald

Schaanwald has a train station that opened in 1902. It is on the Feldkirch-Buchs line.

The station used to have staff until 1988. Over time, fewer and fewer trains stopped there. From 2010 to 2012, only one train stopped at Schaanwald each day. Since 2013, no trains have stopped at this station.

When the station was in use, it was a border station for people coming from Austria. This was because Liechtenstein is in a customs union with Switzerland. Customs checks were done by Swiss officials. Passport checks were stopped in 2011 when Liechtenstein joined the Schengen Area. This area allows people to travel freely between many European countries without passport controls.
