Nendeln is a lovely village found in the Eschen area of Liechtenstein. In 2023, about 1,407 people called Nendeln their home.

A Look at Nendeln's Past

Before Nendeln became a village, the Roman Empire was active here. People have found old Roman villas in Nendeln. These buildings show that Romans lived in this area a long time ago.

Key Events in Nendeln's History

In 1799, during a big war called the War of the Second Coalition, French soldiers burned the village. This was a tough time for the people living there.

Nendeln was also the starting point for an event in 1939. About 40 members of a group called the VBDL began a march from Nendeln. They walked towards Vaduz, the capital city.

Where is Nendeln Located?

Nendeln is in the northern part of Liechtenstein. It sits right on the main road that connects the country to its neighbors. This road goes from Schaan to Schaanwald.

Nendeln's Neighbors

The road links Liechtenstein with Buchs in Switzerland and Feldkirch in Austria. Other villages close to Nendeln include Schaanwald, Mauren, Eschen, and Planken.

Getting Around Nendeln

Nendeln has its own train station. This station is part of the Feldkirch-Buchs train line.

Train Services and Border Checks

Every day, 22 trains stop at Nendeln station. Eleven trains go towards Switzerland, and eleven go towards Austria. Since 2013, the next station towards Austria (Schaanwald) is not always used. When this happens, Nendeln becomes a special border station.

This means that people arriving from Austria might have customs checks here. Liechtenstein and Switzerland have a special agreement to share customs. So, Swiss officials might check bags at the station or on the train. Passport checks are usually not needed anymore. This is because Liechtenstein joined the Schengen Area in 2011. The Schengen Area allows people to travel freely between many European countries without showing their passports.
