History of Schellenberg

Early Times and Roman Rule

The land of Schellenberg was first settled by ancient people called Celts. Later, another group known as Rhaetians lived here. Around 15 BC, the powerful Roman Empire took control of the area. They made it part of their province called Rhaetia.

Over time, this province became a county under the rule of Charlemagne, a famous emperor. The county was often divided among family members who inherited parts of it.

Joining with Vaduz

In 1437, the Lordship of Schellenberg was bought by the Counts of Vaduz. From that moment on, Schellenberg and Vaduz were essentially united. After a conflict called the Swabian War in 1499, both areas came under the protection of Austria.

Different noble families bought and sold these lands over the years. Then, in the early 1700s, the Liechtenstein dynasty bought them. This family had already been given the title of "prince" in 1706. They needed to own land that was directly under the emperor's rule to have a say in important meetings. So, in 1719, the emperor officially joined Vaduz and Schellenberg. This created the Principality of Liechtenstein, which is the country we know today.

Schellenberg During World War II

Near the end of World War II, Liechtenstein did something very brave. It offered safety to about 500 Russian soldiers. These soldiers had fought alongside the German army. This was a big deal because Liechtenstein was a poor country and it was hard for them to feed and care for so many people.

Eventually, the country of Argentina agreed to let these soldiers move there permanently. Today, there is a special monument in Hinterschellenberg called the Russian Monument. It remembers the kindness Liechtenstein showed to these soldiers during the war.
