Ruggell is a small town, also called a municipality, located in Liechtenstein. It's special because it's the most northern town in the country and also the lowest in height. In 2019, about 2,322 people lived there.

A Look at Ruggell's History

Ruggell has a very old history. People lived here even before the Bronze Age, which was thousands of years ago. The first written records about Ruggell are connected to the St. Gallen abbey in Switzerland. The name "Ruggell" might come from a Latin word meaning "clearing the land." The town is well-known for its nature areas and the old St. Fridolin's Parish Church.

How Ruggell is Run

Ruggell is managed by a mayor and an 8-person town council. These leaders are chosen by the people in an election every four years. The current mayor of Ruggell is Christian Öhri, who started in 2023.

Ruggell's Geography and Climate

Even though Liechtenstein is mostly a country with mountains, Ruggell is quite flat. It sits right next to the Rhine River. This is where the borders of Switzerland and Austria meet. On August 13, 2003, Ruggell had the hottest day ever recorded in Liechtenstein. The temperature reached 37.4 degrees Celsius (99.3 degrees Fahrenheit)!

On the north side of the Eschnerberg mountain, there's a special place called the Ruggeller Riet. It's a nature reserve that covers about 90 hectares (which is like 222 football fields!). This area is full of different kinds of plants and animals.

Amazing Biodiversity

The Ruggeller Riet has a huge variety of living things. You can find plants like peat moss, moor grass, and bogrush. In late May and June, the beautiful Siberian iris blooms across large parts of the reserve. Scientists have found 736 different types of plants and 1,631 different animal species here! Some of the birds you might see include the white stork. Sadly, the Eurasian curlew used to breed here but hasn't since 1997.

The "Lättaknätter" People

People from Ruggell are sometimes called "Lättaknätter." This nickname comes from the "Lätta," which is the special clay-like soil found in the area. In the past, people used "peat" (a type of soil made from decayed plants) from this land to heat their homes during cold weather. This old tradition is not as common anymore.

Sports in Ruggell

Ruggell is well-known for its football team, FC Ruggell. It's one of the best teams in Liechtenstein, even though it plays in Switzerland's sixth division. Besides football, people in Ruggell enjoy other sports like cycling, field hockey, skiing, and other winter sports. Ruggell also has one of the four main sports halls in Liechtenstein. The other halls are in Schaan, Vaduz, and Balzers.
