In 1992, he tried to win the USBA heavyweight title. He lost a 12-round fight to Chris Byrd, who later became a world heavyweight champion.

In 1997, Maurice Harris had a close fight with former champion Larry Holmes. The judges made a split decision, meaning they didn't all agree on who won. Harris lost this fight.
