How Mauriceville Started

Mauriceville began to grow when two important railway lines were built. These were the Texarkana and Fort Smith Railway and the Orange and Northwestern Railway. They were finished in 1898 and 1902.

The community was named after Maurice Miller. He was the son of the first president of the Orange and Northwestern Railway. A post office opened in Mauriceville in 1906.

At first, the main business in Mauriceville was the lumber industry. People cut down trees and processed wood. As the local forests became smaller, the town's economy changed. People then started focusing on growing rice and raising dairy cows.
