Max Kellerman (born August 6, 1973) is an American sports TV personality and boxing expert. He is known for hosting and co-hosting many sports shows. Until June 2023, he worked at ESPN. He hosted This Just In with Max Kellerman and co-hosted Keyshawn, JWill and Max on ESPN Radio.

Before that, Max was a co-host on ESPN's talk show First Take. He worked alongside Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim. He also co-hosted Max & Marcellus on ESPNLA with Marcellus Wiley. Max hosted Around the Horn from 2002 to 2004. He also co-hosted SportsNation from 2013 to 2016. He was also a boxing commentator for Friday Night Fights and HBO boxing shows.

Max Kellerman's Career in Sports

Early Broadcasting Days

Max Kellerman started in broadcasting when he was a teenager. He had a public-access TV show about professional boxing called Max on Boxing. Even though it was a simple show, it got attention from people in the boxing world. This included a young Mike Tyson.

After college, Max joined ESPN as a boxing analyst in the late 1990s. He worked on Friday Night Fights. In 2002, he created and hosted his own show, Around the Horn. This show became very popular.

Moving to Fox Sports and MSNBC

In 2004, Max left ESPN to host a new show called I, Max on Fox Sports Net. He discussed sports news with Michael Holley and Bill Wolff. Max took a break from the show after his brother passed away. When he returned, his show had high ratings, but Fox still canceled it in 2005.

In 2005, Max also became a regular guest on Tucker Carlson's show Tucker on MSNBC. He would share his opinions on sports and other topics.

Return to ESPN Radio

In 2006, Max started hosting a radio show on WEPN, an ESPN Radio station in New York City. His show, The Max Kellerman Show, became very popular. In 2007, Brian Kenny joined him as a co-host for a while. Max and ESPN Radio decided to part ways in March 2009.

Boxing Commentary and CNN

Max continued his boxing work at HBO. He worked on Boxing After Dark and later joined the main team for HBO World Championship Boxing. He worked with famous commentators like Jim Lampley and Harold Lederman.

In 2010, Max was hired by CNN. He appeared on CNN American Morning to talk about sports and pop culture.

Back to ESPN in Los Angeles

In December 2010, Max became the new midday host at ESPN Radio station KSPN in Los Angeles. He co-hosted with former NFL player Marcellus Wiley.

In May 2015, Max covered the big Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao boxing match for HBO. He received some comments online for his interview with Manny Pacquiao after the fight. People thought his questions were a bit tough, but Max said he had to ask about Pacquiao's thoughts on the judges' decision.

First Take and Beyond

Max Kellerman joined ESPN's First Take in July 2016. He replaced Skip Bayless and became a co-analyst with Stephen A. Smith and host Molly Qerim.

When HBO stopped showing boxing at the end of 2018, Max signed a new contract with ESPN. This expanded his role in their boxing coverage. He would host the network's boxing shows from the broadcast desk.

In September 2021, Max left First Take. He was later laid off from ESPN in June 2023.

Max Kellerman's Acting Roles

Max Kellerman has also appeared in a few movies and TV shows playing himself.

  • He was in the 2006 film Rocky Balboa. He played a boxing commentator during the fight scene.
  • He also appeared in the 2015 film Creed. He played a reporter interviewing Donnie Creed after a fight.
  • Max played himself in the short film The Wedding Bout.
  • He also appeared as himself in the TV show Real Husbands of Hollywood.

Max Kellerman's Personal Life

Max Kellerman was born in The Bronx and grew up in Greenwich Village in New York City. He went to Hunter College High School and then Columbia University.

His younger brother, Sam, was a writer who also covered boxing. In 2004, Sam passed away, which was a very difficult time for Max.

Max is married and has three daughters.

He has shared that "Max" is his full first name, not a nickname. He is involved in Jewish cultural activities and can speak Yiddish. Max is a big hip hop fan. His favorite artists include the Wu-Tang Clan. He was even part of a hip-hop group with his brother Sam called "Max and Sam." They released a music video called "Young Man Rumble" in 1994.

Max has a small scar on the left side of his mouth from an accident he had as a child.

He is a fan of the New York Giants (football) and New York Yankees (baseball) sports teams.
