Maximilian Morlock (born May 11, 1925 – died September 10, 1994) was a famous German football player. He was active in the 1950s and early 1960s. Max Morlock played as a forward. He was known for his strong technique and fighting spirit on the field.

He played for the West Germany national team. He played in 26 games for his country and scored 21 goals. He was a key player in West Germany's first-ever FIFA World Cup win in 1954.

Max Morlock's Early Career

Max Morlock started playing football at a young age. He learned the game at a club called Eintracht Nürnberg. In 1940, when he was 15, he joined the famous club 1. FC Nürnberg.

Playing for "The Club"

Max Morlock played his first game for 1. FC Nürnberg's main team on November 30, 1941. He stayed with "the Club" for a very long time, until 1964. During his time there, he played over 900 games. He also scored around 700 goals, which is an incredible number!

He helped his team win the German championship twice. They won in 1948 and again in 1961. In 1962, he led them to win the German Cup. Even when he was 38 years old, he played in 21 games during the first season of the Bundesliga. The Bundesliga is Germany's top football league.

World Cup Hero

Max Morlock played his first game for the national team in 1950. He became a very important part of the West Germany team. This team went on to win their first World Cup in 1954.

The 1954 World Cup Final

The final match of the 1954 World Cup was against Hungary. Hungary was a very strong team at the time. West Germany was losing 2–0 early in the game. Max Morlock scored West Germany's first goal. This goal helped start their amazing comeback. West Germany ended up winning the match, which was a huge surprise!

Max Morlock played his last game for the national team in December 1958. It was a friendly game against Egypt.

Remembering Max Morlock

Max Morlock passed away from cancer on September 10, 1994. He was 69 years old. He is remembered as one of Germany's greatest football players.

Awards and Tributes

  • In 1961, Max Morlock was voted the German Footballer of the Year. This award is given by sports journalists.
  • In 1995, a year after he died, a square in front of the Frankenstadion was named after him. This stadium is the home of 1. FC Nürnberg. The square is called Max-Morlock-Platz.
  • In 2006, many fans wanted to rename the Frankenstadion itself to "Max-Morlock-Stadion". The city of Nuremberg made a deal with a bank instead. So, the stadium was named EasyCredit-Stadion for a while.
  • Finally, in July 2017, the stadium was officially renamed the Max-Morlock-Stadion. This was a great way to honor his legacy.
