Max Streibl's Life Story
Max Streibl was born in Oberammergau, Germany, in 1932. His family owned a hotel there. After finishing school in Ettal, he studied law in Munich. He graduated in 1955.
He worked in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and later for the German Bundesrat (a part of Germany's parliament) in Bonn. In 1960, he joined the local government in the Upper Bavaria area.
Early Political Career
From 1961, Max Streibl worked for the state government. He started to become more important in the CSU party. From 1961 to 1967, he led the Junge Union, which is the youth group for the CDU and CSU parties in Bavaria.
In 1962, he became a member of the Bavarian Landtag. The Landtag is like the state parliament for Bavaria. He stayed a member until 1994, when he retired from politics. From 1967 to 1970, he was the General Secretary of the CSU party. This is a very important role in a political party.
Becoming a Minister
Max Streibl served as the Bavarian Minister for the Environment from 1970 to 1977. This was a brand new government department at the time. After that, he became the Minister for Finance from 1977 to 1988.
Leading Bavaria
In 1988, the previous Minister President, Franz Josef Strauß, passed away suddenly. Max Streibl took over his role as Ministerpräsident of Bavaria on October 19, 1988.
Streibl was a strong believer in Catholicism. However, he soon faced some problems. There were questions about his actions and connections between politics and business. Because of these issues, which became known in January 1993, he had to resign on May 27, 1993. Edmund Stoiber then became the new Minister President. These events led to changes in Bavaria, aiming to make the connections between politics and business clearer.
When he resigned, Max Streibl famously said, with tears in his eyes, "Adios Amigos!"
He retired from politics shortly after. Max Streibl passed away in Munich in December 1998.
Honors and Awards
Max Streibl received several important honors during his life:
- He received special honorary doctorates from the University of Passau in 1985 and the University of Munich in 1990.
