Maxwell is a small village in Colfax County, New Mexico, United States. In 2020, about 224 people lived there.

Maxwell was started in 1879. It became a town because of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway railroad. The village was named after Lucien Maxwell. He owned a lot of land and gave some of it for the town to be built.

Where is Maxwell?

Maxwell is in the middle of Colfax County, New Mexico. It sits in the valley of the Canadian River.

The main highway, Interstate 25, goes right past the east side of the village. You can get off at Exit 426 to visit Maxwell. If you drive north on I-25 for about 26 miles, you'll reach Raton. Raton is the main town in Colfax County. If you drive southwest for about 81 miles, you'll get to Las Vegas.

The village of Maxwell covers a total area of about 0.47 square miles (1.23 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge

Just 2 miles northwest of Maxwell village, you'll find the Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge. This special area is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. It's a great place to go birdwatching, especially in spring and fall when many birds are migrating. The refuge has several lakes, fields, and wooded areas. These different habitats are managed to help birds and other wildlife live and thrive.

1964 Tornado

On May 29, 1964, a strong tornado hit Maxwell. This tornado was rated an F3, which means it was very powerful. Sadly, one person died and eight people were hurt. The tornado also destroyed 50 homes in the village. This was one of only four F3 tornadoes ever recorded in New Mexico.
