Mayagüez Arriba is a special neighborhood, also known as a barrio. It is located in the city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico in Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 5,341 people lived there.
A Look at Its History
Mayagüez Arriba has an interesting past. After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
After this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 2,187 people lived in Mayagüez Arriba barrio at that time.
