Maybell is a small community in Moffat County, Colorado, United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP) because the government counts its population. Maybell is part of the larger Craig, CO Micropolitan Statistical Area.
In 2020, only 76 people lived in Maybell. This quiet place holds a record for Colorado. On February 1, 1985, the coldest temperature ever recorded in the state was in Maybell: -61 degrees Fahrenheit! The local post office uses the ZIP Code 81640.

History of Maybell
Maybell was started in the 1880s. It was named after May Bell, who was the wife of a local cattle rancher. Today, Maybell has a few important places. You can find a meat processing plant, a general store where you can buy gas, and a garage. There is also an elementary school, a hotel for people to stay, a restaurant, and the post office. The post office has been open since 1884.
Geography and Location
Maybell is located in the middle of Moffat County. It sits in the valley of the Yampa River. U.S. Highway 40 runs right through the community. If you travel east on Highway 40, you will reach Craig, which is about 30 miles away. Going west on the same highway for about 57 miles will take you to Dinosaur.
Another road, State Highway 318, goes northwest from Maybell. This road stretches about 61 miles to the Utah border. Along the way, you can visit the Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge. The area of Maybell is about 0.525 square miles, and it is all land.
Maybell's Climate
Maybell has a type of weather called a humid continental climate. This means it has big changes in temperature throughout the year. Summers are usually warm to hot, and sometimes humid. Winters are cold, and can be very cold.
As mentioned, Maybell holds the record for the coldest temperature in Colorado. It dropped to -61 degrees Fahrenheit on February 1, 1985.
