McCormick is a small, quiet place in Lewis County, Washington. It's not a big city with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community, meaning it's part of the county but doesn't have its own town council. You can find it near Washington State Route 6. It's located west of Pe Ell. It's also just east of a place called Walville, Washington, which used to be a town but isn't anymore. The Willapa Hills Trail, a popular path, goes right through the area.

History of McCormick

McCormick started as a town in 1897. It grew up around a large lumber mill. This mill belonged to the McCormick Lumber Company. The mill began its work in 1898.

Early Days and the Post Office

A post office was set up in McCormick around the same time. It was named after the mill's owner, Harry W. McCormick. This post office helped people send and receive mail. It stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1929.

Mill Changes and Closure

In 1909, the lumber mill had a big problem. It was almost completely destroyed. But the people of McCormick rebuilt it. The mill kept working until 1927. At that time, it closed because it wasn't making much lumber anymore. After the mill closed, parts of the town were taken apart. The materials were saved by the company's new owner.

Later Uses and a New Owner

From 1935 to 1941, a special hospital called a tuberculosis sanatorium was open in McCormick. This hospital helped people who were sick with tuberculosis. Even after the hospital closed, some people still lived in McCormick. But many started to think of it as a ghost town. In 1954, a man named George Fraser started buying much of the property. He was a retired tailor from Centralia.
