Meadowbrook's Past: A Look at History
People have lived in the Meadowbrook area for a very long time. They settled here after the last Ice Age ended, about 10,000 years ago. The tu-hoo-beed (Thornton Creek) hah-chu-ahbsh (Lake People) were part of the Duwamish native people. They are also known as Dkhw’Duw’Absh, which means "People of the Inside." These Coast Salish people spoke a language called Lushootseed.
From the 1850s into the early 1900s, the Lake City area was cleared of trees. This happened faster after the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway was built around 1886. This railway followed what is now the Burke–Gilman Trail, passing through the nearby Matthews Beach neighborhood. In the 1870s, a small community called "Little Germany" grew here, made up of immigrant farmers. This was around where Nathan Hale High School is today.
A very important part of Meadowbrook's history is the LaVilla Dairy, owned by the Blindheim family. This dairy was located on what is now the 10300 block of Fischer Place NE. There were also orchards (fruit tree farms) extending up the hill nearby. The dairy operated from 1913 to 1929. The dairy building and the family house are still standing today. The land that is now the center of Meadowbrook, including the park and other green spaces, was sold to the City by the Blindheim family.
Thornton Creek: A Natural Gem in Meadowbrook
Thornton Creek flows through Meadowbrook. A lot of work has been done to bring parts of this creek back to their natural state. This process is called daylighting, which means uncovering buried streams so they can flow freely again. A notable part of this restoration is where the north and south branches of the creek meet near the Meadowbrook fields.
The environmental restoration projects near Nathan Hale High School and in the neighborhood are often used for science classes. Students can learn about nature and ecosystems right in their own community. The Meadowbrook Community Center is located almost directly across 35th Avenue from the restored Meadowbrook Pond and wetland area in the Matthews Beach neighborhood. These natural spaces are great for learning and enjoying the outdoors.
