What Can We Measure?
Many different things can be measured. Here are some common features of objects that we can measure:
Measuring Distance
Distance tells us how far apart things are or how long something is.
Measuring Weight
Weight tells us how heavy something is.
- Which is heavier, a group of apples or a group of bananas?
- Did someone lose weight recently?
- Will putting a rock in a boat make it sink?
Measuring Temperature
Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is.
- Is it hotter today in London or in Paris?
- Will ice turn into water if it gets warmer?
- Does someone have a fever?
Measuring Volume
Volume tells us how much space something takes up, or how much liquid a container can hold.
- How many pails of water do you need to fill a bathtub?
- How much olive oil should you add to a recipe?
- How many blocks can fit inside a box?
Measuring Pressure
Pressure tells us how much force is pushing on a certain area.
- How much air should you put in a car tire?
- Will the weather stay good or will a storm arrive?
- Will your ears pop when you climb a tall hill?
You can measure many other things too!
Understanding Units of Measurement
Most features are measured using a number and a unit of measurement. A unit of measurement is a standard amount. The number shows how many times that standard amount fits into the thing you are measuring. For example, if a tree is ten times taller than a meter stick, it is 10 meters tall.
