Mehrdad Pahlbod (Persian: مهرداد پهلبد) was an important Iranian politician. He was born Ezatollah Minbashian (Persian: عزت‌الله مین‌باشیان). He became Iran's very first Minister of Culture. He held this job from 1964 to 1978. He was born on March 16, 1917, and passed away on August 9, 2018.

About Mehrdad Pahlbod

Mehrdad Pahlbod was born in Tehran, the capital city of Iran. His family, the Minbashians, were known for their love of music. His father, Nasru'llah Minbashian, was a Colonel in the Imperial Iranian Army Band Corps. Another relative, Gholam-Hossein Minbashian, was a professional violinist. He also led the Tehran City Hall Symphony Orchestra for many years. He was also the director of the Tehran Conservatory of Music.

Pahlbod studied architecture in Switzerland. In 1956, he became a leader at the Persian Fine Arts Administration in Tehran. This organization later grew into the Iranian Ministry of Culture.

His Career in Government

Mehrdad Pahlbod was a talented violinist and music teacher himself. He worked as a deputy in the Ministry of Education until 1961. From March 1964 to January 1965, he served as the deputy prime minister. This was under the government led by Hassan Ali Mansur.

He then became the Minister for Culture and the Arts. He held this important position from 1965 until 1978. As Minister of Culture, he helped guide Iran's arts and cultural programs.

Later Life

Mehrdad Pahlbod was the second husband of Princess Shams Pahlavi. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, Pahlbod moved away from his home country. He lived in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. He passed away there on August 9, 2018. He was 101 years old.

Pahlbod received many awards during his life. These included the Order of Homayoun 1st Class and the Order of the Crown 4th Class. He also received the Coron Medal in Gold in 1967. In 1971, he was given the 2,500-year celebration of the Persian Empire Medal in Gold. He was also honored by Italy in 1974.
