Meig's Key is a small island located in the beautiful Biscayne National Park in Florida. It's found north of the upper Florida Keys and is part of Miami-Dade County, Florida.
This little island sits in the southern part of Biscayne Bay. You can find it just north of Old Rhodes Key and Totten Key. It's also southeast of the southern tip of Elliott Key and directly south of Adams Key. Meig's Key is on the south side of Caesar Creek, a waterway that separates Elliott and Old Rhodes Keys.
Island History: How Meig's Key Got Its Name
Meig's Key has had a few different names over time. In the past, people called it Black Caesar's Key or Caesar Key.
Who Was William Meigs?
The island was likely renamed after a person named William Meigs. He moved to the Biscayne Bay area in 1891 from a city called Philadelphia.
Early Maps and Names
In 1849, a mapmaker named Gerdes wrote about the area. He described "Black Caesar's Key" as a small island between Old Rhodes Key and Elliott's Key. He also mentioned that the water passages on both sides were called "Black Caesar's Creek." Later, in 1978, a report about Biscayne National Monument included a map that showed the island named Caesar Key in the same spot.
