The city of Mellette was started in 1881. It was named after Arthur C. Mellette, who was a governor of South Dakota.

Public Education in Mellette
The main school system in Mellette is the Northwestern Area School District #56-7. This school district serves the northern part of Spink County. It teaches students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.
Around 260 students attend schools in this district. The sports teams, known as the Northwestern Wildcats, compete in Class B under the SDHSAA (South Dakota High School Activities Association). They have won a total of 15 state championships in various sports.
